Spin-polarized low energy electron microscopy of ferromagnetic layers

چکیده
Spin-polarized low energy electron microscopy (SPLEEM) is a powerful technique for the study of the magnetic domain structure of ferromagnetic surfaces, thin films and ferromagnetic / nonferromagnetic thin film systems. The unique feature of this instrument is the combination of magnetic with topographic imaging on an atomic depth scale level, and with structural information via low energy electron diffraction (LEED) from submicron regions. These capabilities are illustrated by studies of cobalt layers on W(110), Cu(l l l ) and Au(l l l ) surfaces, of Co-Cu and Co-Au bilayers and of Co/Au/Co and Co/Cu/Co sandwiches.

Spin-dependent hot electron transport in Co/Cu thin films
Hot-electron transport in Co/Cu/Co trilayer films has been studied in the energy range from 1.0 to 2.0 eV using ballistic electron magnetic microscopy. Both the spin-dependent attenuation lengths of Co and the cumulative polarizing effects of spin-dependent tunneling and transmission across a Co/Cu interface have been determined. For very thin (a few A) Co layers, the latter effects result in a...

We investigate the spin- and energy-dependent tunneling through a single organic molecule (CoPc) adsorbed on a ferromagnetic Fe thin film, spatially resolved by low-temperature spin-polarized scanning tunneling microscopy. Interestingly, the metal ion as well as the organic ligand show a significant spin dependence of tunneling current flow. State-of-the-art ab initio calculations including als...
متن کاملOptimization of spin-triplet supercurrent in ferromagnetic Josephson junctions.
We have observed long-range spin-triplet supercurrents in Josephson junctions containing ferromagnetic (F) materials, which are generated by noncollinear magnetizations between a central Co/Ru/Co synthetic antiferromagnet and two outer thin F layers. Here we show that the spin-triplet supercurrent is enhanced up to 20 times after our samples are subject to a large in-plane field. This occurs be...
متن کاملSpin-resolved mapping of spin contribution to exchange-correlation holes.
By means of spin-polarized electron coincidence spectroscopy we explore the fundamental issue of spin-resolved contributions to the exchange-correlation hole in many-electron systems. We present a joint experimental and theoretical study of correlated electron pair emission from a ferromagnetic Fe(001) surface induced by spin-polarized low-energy electrons. We demonstrate that the contribution ...
متن کاملMagnetism of epitaxial Tb films on W(110) studied by spin-polarized low-energy electron microscopy
Thin epitaxial films of Tb metal were grown on a clean W(110) substrate in ultrahigh vacuum and studied in situ by low-energy electron microscopy. Annealed films present magnetic contrast in spin-polarized low-energy electron microscopy. The energy dependence of the electron reflectivity was determined and a maximum value of its spin asymmetry of about 1% was measured. The magnetization directi...
